Overview

• Introduction – An overview of the course and discussion of attendees’ current level of knowledge and a brief introduction to abrasive wheels.
• Health and Safety – Requirements under the Provision and Use of Work Equipment (PUWER) Regulations, Safety in the Use of Abrasive Wheels HSG17 and a brief outline of the Health and Safety at Work Act 1974.
• Precautions – Advice on hazards and risks and the precautions to take in order to prevent accidents from the use of abrasive wheels.
• Markings – The British standard system for the marking of abrasive wheels and how to apply them.
• Store and Transport – How different types of abrasive wheels are stored and how to transport them safely.
• Inspection – What to look for and how to inspect abrasive wheels for damage.
• Function – The function of various types of abrasive wheels, their components and how they are used.
• Assembly / Practical exercise – How to mount abrasive wheels correctly and ensure they are fit for purpose.
• Dressing – How to properly dress an abrasive wheel, removing and dulled abrasive or other material in order to correct any uneven wear on the wheel.
• Adjustment – How to ensure machinery is adjusted according to the type of abrasive wheel and that work is carried out at the correct height.
• Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) – The types of PPE and their importance and use in relation to abrasive wheels.
• Records – The keeping of records to monitor maintenance and refresher/training requirements.
• Questions and Answers – Time for attendees to clarify and query any of the points raised in the course plus course questionnaire to test attendees’ knowledge.
