simplifying Health and Safety

MBO Safety Services Limited                                                                           IOSH Managing Safely

Course Overview

Delegates This course is designed for those who have health and safety responsibilities within an organisation, such as managers and supervisors. It’s designed to get managers up to speed on the practical actions they need to take to handle safety and health in their teams.
Certificate The course includes written and practical assessments with the successful delegate receiving a certificate from IOSH.

Course duration 4 days.

Overview

  • Introducing Managing Safely – Some managers may see health and safety as an addon to their role – even an intrusion. The first module makes it clear that managers are accountable for their teams, and makes a persuasive case for managing safely.
  • Assessing Risks – This module defines and demystifies ‘risk’ and ‘risk assessment’. Risk assessments and a simple scoring system are introduced, and delegates carry out a series of assessments.
  • Controlling Risks – Here the session tackles cutting risks down, concentrating on the best techniques to control key risks, and how to choose the right method.
  • Understanding your Responsibilities – This module looks at the demands of the law and how the legal system works, and for those who do not have strict guidelines or laws, there is guidance and placeholders to fill with relevant information and introduces a health and safety management system.
  • Identifying Hazards – All the main issues any operation has to deal with are covered in this module – aggression and violence, asbestos, bullying, chemicals, computer workstations, confined spaces, drugs and alcohol, electricity, fire, getting in and out, heights, housekeeping, lighting, manual handling, noise, plant and machinery, radiation, slips and trips, stress, temperature, vehicles and transport, and vibration.
  • Investigating Accidents and Incidents – The session starts with why incidents should be investigated, and goes on to cover why things go wrong, and how to carry out an investigation when they do.
  • Measuring Performance – This module explains how checking performance can help to improve health and safety. Delegates learn how to develop basic performance indicators, and get to grips with auditing and proactive and reactive measuring.

                                                                IOSH Working Safely

Course Overview

Delegates This course is designed for people at any level within an organisation or in any sector who require a good grounding of health and safety.  It focuses on why health and safety is important, and how you can make a real difference to the wellbeing of yourself and others through changing your behaviour.
This course is accepted by CITB for CSCS card applications.

Certificate The course includes written and practical assessments with the successful delegate receiving a certificate from IOSH.

Course duration 6 hours.

Overview Note: IOSH recommends that, due to ever-changing legislation, this course should be renewed every three years.

  • Introducing Working Safely – It is not unusual for delegates coming on an introductory course to think that accidents only happen to ‘other people’.  This module stresses the realities of the human suffering behind the statistics and emphasises the importance of personal responsibility.
  • Defining Hazard and Risk – This module puts ‘hazard’ and ‘risk’ into everyday language, and uses familiar examples to show what can happen.  Importantly, it makes it clear that even something that is very simple or repeated over and over again can go wrong, with serious consequences.   Focusing on the six broad hazard groups, delegates are asked to think about the hazards and risks they come across in their own work.  ‘Risk assessment’ is demystified – delegates learn that we all carry out informal assessments day in, day out.
  • Identifying Common Hazards – All the main issues are covered in this module – aggression and violence, asbestos, bullying, chemicals and harmful substances, computer workstations, confined spaces, drugs and alcohol, fire, electricity, getting in and out, height, housekeeping, lighting, manual handling, noise, personal hygiene, plant and machinery, slips and trips, stress, temperature, vehicles and transport, and welfare facilities. Each area is backed by crystal-clear examples and recognisable scenarios, and useful summaries reinforce the key learning points.
  • Improving Safety Performance – This module deals with systems and processes, making sure that any jargon is explained in easily understood terms.  The session bridges the gap between management and workforce, encouraging delegates to play a part in processes that are commonly seen as just down to their manager or supervisor. Other areas – including contract work, inspections, safe systems and permits, protective equipment, signage, emergency procedures, reporting and health checks – are all focused on from the delegate’s point of view.

• Managing Safety and Health – Delegates will learn to plan the overall direction for safety and health in an organisation by developing and implementing a safety and health policy, with improving company performance as the objective. As well as developing an understanding of the importance of adequately resourcing a safety and health management system and understanding where they want to position their organisations’ safety performance against other organisations.
• The Importance of Safety and Health – Delegates will learn to understand the importance of monitoring and reviewing safety and health performance to determine the effectiveness of a safety and health management system. They will learn the opportunities of good performance, as well as the consequences of poor performance.
