Delegates
This course is designed for those who have to undertake or contribute to risk assessments as part of their role within an organisation. This includes managers and supervisors but is useful for most employees, who should be aware of what risk assessment involves.

Overview

  • Introduction – An overview of the course and discussion of attendees’ current level of knowledge.
  • What is a Risk Assessment? – A definition of risk assessment and overview of the main process.
  • Why Assess Risk? – Why risk assessment is useful in managing health and safety and the main reasons why risk assessments are required.
  • The Legal Requirements – The UK regulations that require risk assessments to be carried out and the duties of employers and employees with regards to risk assessment.
  • Key Definitions – Definitions are provided for all the key terms used in risk assessment including ‘hazard’ and ‘risk’.
  • 5 steps to Risk Assessment – A step-by-step overview of the risk assessment process.
  • Practical Exercise – Practical application of risk assessment to give attendees some valuable experience.
  • Traps to be avoided – Some misconceptions about Risk Assessment.
  • Summary and Questions and Answers – A short summary of the course and a question and answer session to enable attendees to clarify any points raised.

Course Overview

Delegates
This course is designed for those who have Health and Safety responsibilities in a maintenance/engineering role within an organisation, such as managers, supervisors, engineers and contractors.

Certificate
Delegates will receive a certificate of attendance.  We recommend that this course is renewed every 3 years.

Course duration
1 – 2 days (depending on size of groups).

Overview 

  • Introduction – An overview of the course and discussion of attendees’ current level of knowledge. 
  • UK Health and Safety legislation – An overview of the key Health and Safety Regulations that companies in the UK need to comply with, highlighting Permit to Work.
  • Roles and Responsibilities – An overview of roles and responsibilities for persons using a Permit to Work system.
  • Contractor Management – An overview of the relationship between Permit to Work and Contractor Management.
  • Risk Assessments and Method Statements – An overview of how Risk Assessments and Method Statements play an important role in the Permit to Work system.
  • Lock-Out Procedure – An overview of what is a Lock-Out procedure and when to use it.
  • 5 minute DVD – Explaining Permit to Work, its requirements and how it is used to control hazardous projects.
  • Questionnaire – Attendees to clarify and query any of the points in the course, plus the course quiz to test attendees’ knowledge.
  • Practical Session – An overview using scenarios on how to plan, using documentation required during Permit to Work activities.
  • Practical Session using Company’s documentation – Scenarios given for group role-play for Facility Managers and Contractors.
