The HSE are now referring to catastrophic bleeding as life-threatening bleeding and have also offered guidance for employers on how to recognise if this is a risk in the workplace.
This is an area that can be taught in addition to First Aid training or separately, but whether this is taught as a standalone module or in addition to the First Aid at Work qualification, additional certification will be provided to enable learners to evidence this within their workplace.
The HSE state that haemostatic dressings, tourniquets and wound packing materials (sterile gauze) may be required in addition to the standard first aid kit within a workplace therefore further training in the application of these may be needed with a particular focus on areas such as agriculture, forestry, construction, and working locations in remote areas. It is also suggested that those working in hospitality, catering, events and other similar sectors could benefit from this training to prepare employees to treat colleagues or members of the public from potentially life-threatening injuries.
This area of First Aid could help save lives or reduce the damage of potentially life changing injuries. If you would like further information or to discuss this further please feel free to get in touch:
