CITB – SITE MANAGEMENT SAFETY TRAINING SCHEME (SMSTS) COURSE

Last week we had some candidates come to our training centre to complete their week long course in Site Management and Safety. Across the five days, the candidates were introduced to the course, completed interactive tasks, and passed an assessment, helping them to take the next step in their career.

What will you learn about on the course? Here is the breakdown…

Manage health and safety on site in accordance with current legal provisions, and within the context of their management or supervisory role.
− Develop an understanding of responsibility and accountability for site health, safety and welfare.
− Recognise that a safe site is efficient, economical and productive.
− Implement all health, safety, welfare and environmental legislation which affects them during their daily work.

• Health and Safety Law – Covering acts, regulations, approved codes of practices, guidance (HSE/industry), criminal law, powers of inspectors and improvement and prohibition notices.

• Management of Plant, Equipment and Systems of Work – lifting appliances, lifting gear and Personal Protective Equipment (PPE).

• Management of Contractors and the Working Environment-Construction (Design and Management) Regulations.

• Working at Height

• Construction Health

  • Risks – Welfare, hazardous substances, asbestos, vibration, noise, electricity at work, fire prevention, confined spaces etc.

• Monitoring – inspections, surveys, tours, auditing, accident reporting and investigation.

• Communication and Co-operation – duties to provide information, instruction and training, engaging with contractors and workers.

What do you need to do to pass this course? 

A the end of the week you will sit an assessment. This assessment will be by multiple choice questions, the completion of core exercises, and a case study throughout the course duration. You will also be expected to actively participate during the course.
