With summer upon us and the events rolling in. Have you prepared properly to keep yourself and others safe at the risk of fire?
If you are running an event, you are responsible for ensuring that you have the correct fire safety equipment. There are certain regulations that must be followed, and these will vary depending on the size of the venue, the amount of people attending, the equipment that will be at the venue i.e electrical, kitchen areas etc.
The HSE supplies a 5 step list to refer to when assessing the risk of fire. This will be applicable to you when holding an event to prepare you, your staff and your attendees properly.
- Step 1 assess the hazards that could start a fire. What could burn? What is most at risk for being exposed to fire?
- Step 2 look at the people at risk. If there is a fire, everyone is at risk. How do you prepare these people to act in the case of a fire though? Yourself, staff and attendees all need to be aware of vital information such as fire exits, locations of extinguishers and assembly points.
- Step 3 evaluate and act. Plan the exit routes. Plan the extinguishers needed. Remove and reduce the risk of fire.
- Step 4 record plan and train. Do your staff know what extinguishers to use in certain situations and do they know the procedure to follow in the case of a fire? Make sure you are recording the information you find when assessing risks and plan what you will do to act upon them.
- Step 5 review your findings. What variables may change throughout your event that will need to be anticipated, and how will you prepare for them?
To prevent and mitigate the risk of fire at an event. You need to make sure that, based on the findings of the assessment, you take adequate and appropriate fire safety measures to minimise the risk of injury or loss of life in the event of a fire
