It is strongly recommended that first-aiders undertake annual refresher training, over half a day, during any three-year certification period.
Although not mandatory, this will help qualified first-aiders maintain their basic skills and keep up to date with any changes to first-aid procedures.
However, these refreshers and e-learning courses do not replace the full course. To be competent to act as a workplace first aider, you must complete the full course.
Emergency first aid training enables a first-aider to give emergency first aid to someone who is injured or becomes ill while at work. This course is designed for people who want to receive training in Emergency First Aid at Work and is ideally suited for nominated first-aiders in smaller, low-risk working environments. On successful completion of the course, the delegate will receive a Level 3 Award in Emergency First Aid at Work (QCF) certificate which is valid for 3 years.
First aid at work training includes EFAW and also equips the first-aider to apply first aid to a range of specific injuries and illnesses. This course is designed for anyone who wants to become an accredited first-aider in the workplace. On successful completion of the course, the delegate will receive a Level 3 Award in First Aid at Work (QCF) certificate which is valid for 3 years. The HSE recommend that this course is refreshed every 12 months.
Employers may also identify some other level or standard of training that is appropriate to their needs.
