New Fire Safety Regulations: What You Need to Know

Starting in 2025, several important fire safety regulations will come into effect across England. These changes aim to enhance safety for everyone, particularly those in care homes and high-risk buildings. Here’s a quick overview of what you need to know:

Sprinklers in New Care Homes

Effective Date: 2 March 2025

From March 2025, all newly built care homes must have sprinkler systems installed. This measure is designed to protect vulnerable residents by quickly suppressing fires and reducing the risk of harm.

European Fire Testing Standards

Effective Date: March 2025

The UK will adopt the updated BS EN 13501 standards, replacing the old BS 476 standards. This change will align the UK with European fire safety standards, ensuring more rigorous testing and classification of building materials.

Personal Emergency Evacuation Plans (PEEPs)

Effective Date: March 2025

High-rise and high-risk buildings will need tailored Personal Emergency Evacuation Plans (PEEPs) for vulnerable residents. These plans will help ensure that those with disabilities or mobility issues can evacuate safely in an emergency.

Phasing Out AFFF Fire Extinguishers

Effective Date: 4 July 2025

AFFF (Aqueous Film Forming Foam) fire extinguishers will be banned due to their environmental impact. Property owners will need to switch to eco-friendly alternatives to protect both people and the environment.
