{"id":10550,"date":"2021-12-08T15:46:03","date_gmt":"2021-12-08T15:46:03","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/mbosafetyservices.co.uk\/staging\/?p=10550"},"modified":"2021-12-08T15:46:03","modified_gmt":"2021-12-08T15:46:03","slug":"school-and-contractor-fined-for-unsafe-removal-of-asbestos","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/mbosafetyservices.co.uk\/staging\/school-and-contractor-fined-for-unsafe-removal-of-asbestos\/","title":{"rendered":"School and Contractor Fined for Unsafe Removal of Asbestos"},"content":{"rendered":"<style type=\"text\/css\"><\/style><p>A school and its maintenance contractor have been fined after workers disturbed asbestos at the school while installing a new heating system.<\/p>\n<p>A Court heard that, in February 2019, a Company had been contracted by a School to install a new heating system in the school building.<\/p>\n<p>In the course of the work, ceiling tiles containing asbestos were disturbed, potentially exposing several people to asbestos fibres.<\/p>\n<p>An investigation by the Health and Safety Executive (HSE) found that the contractor and the school both failed to refer to existing asbestos registers and management plans to identify the presence of asbestos within the school building.<\/p>\n<p>The School pleaded guilty to breaching sections 2(1) and 3(1) of the Health and Safety at Work etc. Act 1974 and was fined \u00a33000 with \u00a34,785.37 costs.<\/p>\n<p>The maintenance Contractor pleaded guilty to breaching sections 2(1) and 3(1) of the Health and Safety at Work etc. Act 1974 and was fined \u00a32,000 with \u00a34,710.37 costs.<\/p>\n<p>Speaking after the hearing, a HSE inspector commented, \u201cThe dangers associated with asbestos are well known and advice and guidance is freely available from HSE and other organisations. Those in charge of premises have a duty to inform contractors of the presence of asbestos containing materials, ensuring that works are carried out safely.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThose undertaking work which is likely to disturb asbestos, or asbestos containing materials, should ensure that building occupants and operatives are not exposed to asbestos.
