April marks Stress Awareness Month, an ideal moment for organisations to take meaningful action to prevent work related stress and strengthen mental health support in the workplace. The Working Minds campaign encourages employers to adopt five practical steps across five weeks, helping to embed stress prevention into everyday working life rather than treating it as a one off exercise.
At MBO Safety Services, we fully support this proactive approach. As a UK health and safety training provider, we see first hand how early intervention, open conversations, and structured processes can transform workplace wellbeing. We are also pleased to share that we will be delivering Mental Health Awareness training on 21 May 2026, supporting organisations to build confidence and competence in this vital area.
🌱 Why Stress Prevention Matters
Preventing work related stress is not only good practice, it is a legal requirement for all employers. The Health and Safety Executive (HSE) highlights that failing to manage stress can lead to reduced productivity, increased sickness absence, and the potential loss of valued team members.
Stress can present in many ways. Changes in behaviour such as increased absence, lateness, reduced motivation, or emotional shifts may indicate that someone is struggling. At a team level, warning signs can include higher turnover, more conflict, or a rise in complaints and grievances.
Employers are not expected to diagnose or treat stress, but they are responsible for identifying risks and taking action to reduce them.
🖐️ The Five Steps: One Focus Each Week
The Working Minds campaign encourages employers to follow these five Rs throughout April:
1. Reach Out
Start conversations with individuals or teams. Open dialogue helps identify common stressors and gives employees the confidence to speak up.
2. Recognise
Understand the signs and causes of stress. This includes reviewing sickness records, surveys, or feedback to spot patterns.
3. Respond
Agree clear action points to address identified risks. This may involve workload adjustments, improved communication, or additional support.
4. Reflect
Review the impact of the actions taken. Have things improved? What still needs attention?
5. Make it Routine
Embed stress prevention into everyday working life. Regular check ins and ongoing monitoring help ensure wellbeing remains a priority.
🧰 Tools and Support Available
The Working Minds campaign provides a range of free resources including:
- Online learning modules
- Talking Toolkits
- Risk assessment templates
- Guidance on legal responsibilities
These tools help employers take the first step or review existing practices. Organisations such as the CIPD and NEBOSH also support the campaign, emphasising the importance of proactive wellbeing strategies and realistic job design.
