The Dangers of Solvents in the Workplace

Solvents, also known as VOCs (volatile organic compounds) are found in many construction products such as paint, paint strippers, thinners and glue. They are used to dissolve or dilute other substances but can be potentially harmful.

These dangers can occur through breathing in vapours, skin contact which can cause burns or dermatitis with prolonged exposure, eye contact which can cause irritation, and ingestion. Solvents can cause short-term problems such as irritation, headaches, nausea, dizziness and light-headedness. Long-term issues can include dermatitis as well as liver, kidney and neurological diseases.

According to the Control of Hazardous to Health (COSHH) Regulations employers must protect against the risks from hazardous substances. It’s important to consider who is using products containing solvents, the product they are using, how long they will be exposed to solvents and at what volume, and where they will be working- for example making sure there is adequate ventilation.

One should aim to lower the risks posed by solvents in the workplace by using products containing little or no organic solvents, avoiding products containing sensitisers, avoiding spraying products unnecessarily as this will release more solvent into the air, using the minimum amount of product for the job, and not using solvents to remove products such as paint from the skin.

As well as lowering the risk it’s also important to control exposure through keeping non-essential workers away from the work area until the risk has been minimised, ensuring adequate ventilation, providing adequate Respiratory Protective Equipment (RPE) which have been fit tested, eye protection, gloves, overalls, providing good washing facilities, and having appropriate first aid treatment for those affected by solvents.

Finally, adequate training should be given to employees so that they can follow the correct guidelines for solvent use as well as being able to spot the signs of ill-health.
