Overview
• Introduction – An overview of the course and discussion of attendees’ current level of knowledge.
• UK Health and Safety Legislation – An outline of the key Health and Safety Regulations in particular those contained within the Health and Safety at Work Act 1974 that companies in the UK need to comply with regarding COSHH.
• The Chemicals (Hazard Information and Packaging for Supply) Regulations (CHIP) – The responsibilities of suppliers as identified in CHIP regulations.
• Recognition – How to recognise what is considered to be a hazardous substance under COSHH and what is not. Understand the meaning of relevant warning symbols and the 3 different categories; liquid, solid and gaseous.
• Requirements – The 8 steps to follow in order to comply with COSHH.
• Risk – How to identify and mitigate or control risk. How to carry out COSHH Risk Assessments and the importance of safety data sheets. Practical Exercise – Practical application of risk assessment to give attendees some valuable experience.
• Effect – The effect hazardous substances can have on Health and Safety.
• Duty – The duty of both the employer and the employee in relation to COSHH and the responsibilities of each.
• Spillages – How to deal with spillages and disposal via appropriate waste streams.
• Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) – The use of suitable PPE.
• Health Surveillance – What is health surveillance and how on is carried out.
• Questions and Answers – Time for attendees to clarify and query any of the points raised in the course plus course questionnaire to test attendees’ knowledge.
