This course is designed for people who want to receive training in Awareness of First Aid for Mental Health. Anyone can be affected by a mental health condition - either themselves or a family member, friend or colleague.

This awareness course is suitable for everyone as it provides learners with the knowledge to recognise a suspected mental health condition and the skills to start a conversation and be able to signpost a person towards professional help.

All members of the public can benefit from this course and it is a great stepping stone into First Aid for Mental Health.

Certificate

Upon successful completion of the course, the delegate will receive a Level 1 Award in Awareness of First Aid for Mental Health (RQF) certificate which is valid for 3 years.

It is strongly recommended that the learner attends annual refresher training.

After three years the certificate will expire, and the learner will need to complete the full course again to requalify for a further three years.

• Introduction – What is first aid for mental health?
• Identifying mental health conditions.
• What mental health is, why people develop mental health conditions and the role of a First Aider for mental health.
• How to provide advice and practical support for a person presenting a mental health condition.
• How to recognise and manage stress.
• How to recognise a range of mental health conditions.
• Understand the impact of substance abuse on mental health.
• Understand the first aid action plan for mental health and to be able to put it in place.
• How to implement a positive mental health culture in the workplace.

• Questions and answers – There are ongoing questions and answers during the course to clarify and query any of the points raised.

• Assessment – The qualification is assessed through a multiple-choice question paper. A Level 1 Award in Awareness of First Aid for Mental Health will be issued to the learner, subject to successful assessment.
