This course is designed for those who have health and safety responsibilities within an organisation, such as managers and supervisors who may be required to carry out an accident investigation.

Overview
• Introduction – An overview of the course and discussion of attendees’ current level of knowledge.
• Health and Safety at Work Act (1974) – An overview of the key Health and Safety regulations to which companies in the UK and the legal requirements for reporting and recording such incidents.
• Hazard Spotting – An exercise on understanding the hazards within a working environment, followed by a definition and explanation on ‘what is an accident’.
• Accident Prevention Methods – The difference between reactive and pro-active prevention methods, the importance of Safe Systems of Work and the hierarchy of control methods. An explanation of why Accident Investigations are completed.
• Accident Investigation Techniques – Steps to carry out while undertaking accident investigation eg taking pictures, taking measurements. Using the 5 ‘Whys’ technique to determine the root cause followed by a practical exercise.
• Accident Reporting – How to gather evidence and information such as victim, eyewitness and bystander reports. An overview of the 5 stages on how to complete a full investigation including Company documentation.
• Report Writing – The language to use when writing an accident investigation report to include the 7 categories, ‘What’, ‘Who’, ‘Where’, ‘When’ ‘How’, ‘Why’ and ‘Recommendations’, and the importance of keeping and maintaining records.
• Report Analysis – How to analyse information gathered to produce a no-blame report of the incident and to provide recommendations on future prevention.
• Q & A and Quiz – An opportunity for delegates to clarify and query any points covered by the course, followed by a quiz to test their knowledge.
